About
In 1993, the Mayor and Board of Aldermen empowered a cross section of community representatives to create a strategic vision for the future of Lee's Summit. These processes are one of the most successful ways the City can identify priorities for the future of the community. By engaging a diverse group of individuals in our City to become actively involved in how these decisions are to be made, the City is better able to serve the community as a whole. The stakeholder group worked for many months to develop the first citizens' strategic plan for our community, Lee's Summit 21st Century. The plan contained goals and objectives agreed upon by the group as vital to the future of Lee's Summit. After much progress was made regarding the objectives contained in the plan, an update was completed in 1999. Since that time, the City staff, boards and commissions, and the Mayor and City Council have worked to accomplish many of the objectives included in the strategic plan, such as Legacy Park, the new City Hall, the Gamber Center and a revitalized downtown.
In the summer of 2008 an initiating committee, formed by residents, began meeting to revisit and update the strategic plan. This began the third strategic planning process that the City has undertaken since the early 1990s. To help facilitate the process, the City again contracted with the National Civic League.
The initiating committee identified nearly 300 key stakeholders that began working on this plan in September, 2008. Until April of 2009, the stakeholders dedicated three hours of their evenings every three weeks to this innovative process in order to chart Lee's Summit’s tomorrow. The strategic plan, referred to as "Lee’s Summit 360: Charting Tomorrow", defines what our community will face in the next ten to twenty years. The Lee's Summit 360° Strategic Planning process has had tremendous support from the community, and it shows in the details of our most recent strategic plan.
