City's new Development Center opens in January

The LS360 Economic Development KPA is chaired by Rick Viar and Steve Tominia, and some exciting news was recently announced as this group of civic volunteers strives to fulfill its stated vision and goals.

Specifically, the City of Lee’s Summit’s highly anticipated new Development Center to enhance and promote business development activity within the community officially opened for business on Jan.

21, 2014.

Located on the first floor of Lee’s Summit City Hall, the Development Center is considered the “one-stop shop” to successfully navigate the steps of the business-development process from the application stage to final occupancy.

To this end, a new portal page has been created and is located at www.cityofls.net/business.aspx.

This quick, online resource provides easy access to learn more about business and development resources at the City and in Lee’s Summit. Through the portal page, up-and-coming and current entrepreneurs can also link to the websites of the City’s local partners in promoting business and economic development. Those partner organizations are the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce, the Lee’s Summit Economic Development Council, Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street and Boost Lee’s Summit.

Along with improving communications, the City has selected an experienced team of individuals to staff the Development Center.

That team consists of three project managers, a business service representative and a customer service representative. These individuals have a combined level of experience of more than 25 years in project planning, construction plan review, permitting and inspection services.

In addition, Viar said the Economic Development KPA will continue to work on the following priorities in the months ahead.

  • Support the City’s strategies to ultimately centralize the development/re-development approval and oversight process.
  • Encourage identification of a consistent economic development vision for the community with full concurrence and support from LS360, Lees Summit Economic Development Council, City Hall, and City Council.
  • Make certain the “project manager system” is implemented by City Hall to ensure consistent policy oversight and project management. This should result in a more user-friendly, “one-stop shop” with a dedicated ombudsman and a “Development 101″ approach.
